I started to change Maddie's earrings on wednesday night only to discover that she was missing an earring back. Something made me feel her ear, and I discovered a hard spot in her earlobe. At first I thought that it was just cartilage, but as I felt it I realized it was the earring back. Her ear had completely swallowed her earring back!!! I asked her several times if her ear was bothering her, but she always answered "no." I made some phone calls and searched the internet and found out that this is not an uncommon occurence. I called the pediatricians office and they informed me that we should go to the ER to have it removed. We drove to the nearest childrens hospital on friday after school. We patiently waited and prayed for two hours and then the doctor finally came in to remove it. Maddie was such a trooper. They wrapped her up in a sheet like a little burrito, layed her on her stomach, gave her several shots of Lidocaine and made a small incision. After removing the earring back, the doctor had to put two stitches in her ear. She cried a little and Doug and I tried to talk her through it to keep her mind off of it. As soon as the doctor finished, we unwrapped her, cleaned her up and the nurse gave her a popsicle... she was already smiling. She has not complained at all and we are all glad that it is over. Maddie says that she never wants to wear earrings again! Thanks again for all of your prayers and support!
